Simple facts of kidney disease in the United States:

1.  One in 10 American adults, more than 20 million, have some level of chronic kidney disease (CKD) which is defined as a condition with reduced kidney function over time (more than 3 months).

2.  The incidence of CKD is increasing most rapidly in people ages 65 and older.

3.  CKD is classified into 5 different stages based on the level of kidney functions.  Stage one disease is the mildest; on the contrary, stage five disease is the most severe.  ESRD (End Stage Renal Disease) represents the stage for patients whose kidney functions are so poor requiring the support of renal replacement therapy (dialysis, or transplantation).

4.  Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) is a condition results in sudden and rapid deterioration of kidney functions.

5.  The number of hospitalizations that included an AKI diagnosis dramatically increases in the last 10 years.

6.  There are many complications in kidney failure.  To name a few:  electrolytes imbalance, elevated blood pressure, anemia, etc.

7.  The leading cause of death in patients with CKD is cardiovascular disease.

8.  The goal of a nephrologist is to make the appropriate diagnosis, halt or even reverse the progression of kidney disease, control blood pressure, manage complications of kidney failure, and most importantly, increase the survival and the quality of life of patients.
